The loads transmitted by the foundation to the ground give rise to its deformation and this translates into settlements, horizontal displacements, and rotations of the structure that, if excessive, may cause fissures, cracks, or other pathologies. Settlement or settlement is therefore understood as the vertical downward movement of the ground, due to the application of loads, which cause changes in tensions within the ground, or the downward movement of a construction element, as a consequence of the modification of the ground, which sustains it, due to the action of external agents.
